How to Get Food Stamps in Maryland (SNAP)

The Maryland Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides low-income individuals and families with food they need to sustain proper health. The SNAP program transfers food assistance benefits to the electronic Independence EBT debit card which allows families to buy food at any grocery store or convenience shop displaying the Quest logo. In order to get food stamps in Maryland, individuals must meet the income requirements and fill out an online or paper SNAP application to be considered for eligibility.

  1. Determine your eligibility; a family must have up to $2,000 in available monthly resources and disabled persons must have no more than $3,000 in countable resources to qualify.
  2. Gather required application documents such as your social security number, a recent check stub and any current bank statements.
  3. File an online SNAP application. Click on the "Start A New Application" link from the Maryland Department of Human Resources website. Follow all onscreen prompts. Expect to complete the application within 20 to 45 minutes.
  4. Review and submit your online SNAP application. Keep a reference of your username and password safe if you need to revisit the application.
